Rune Energy Targets 100 MW of Solar-Powered Modular GPU Compute
Rune Energy plans 100 MW of compute within 12 months using 100 kW RELIC GPU modules wired to the DC side of solar farms to soak up power the grid can't take.

San Francisco, October 10 — Rune Energy, a San Francisco startup, plans to scale to 100 MW of compute over the next 12 months by placing modular GPU data centers directly on solar farms, IEEE Spectrum reported. Each module can draw up to 100 kW from solar output that would otherwise be curtailed or clipped.
The company's pitch reverses the usual order. Instead of finishing a building and waiting for a utility connection, Rune goes where generation already exceeds what the grid can accept.
The Technical Details
Rune calls its modules Renewable Energy Linked Intelligent Compute, or RELIC. Each unit packs GPUs, networking, cooling, power electronics and batteries into one container built at Rune's Mountain View, California, factory.
The modules tap the solar array's DC bus before the inverter. DC-to-DC converters step the roughly 1,500 V array voltage down to a level the GPUs can use. Rune buys the energy under power purchase agreements with solar farm owners, and the sites have no backup grid connection.
